Global Citizen Scholar Reflection
When I first heard of global citizen scholar, I only saw it in terms of being aware what is happening around the world. Which I thought could be done by watching the news and reading the paper. Throughout my time at the University of Cincinnati (UC) and the University Honors Program (UHP), I have refined this definition ever so slightly. I have realized that being a global citizen does not only mean that you are able to understand the issues of other countries but also understand the issues of your own country and be able take what you understand and apply to a broader spectrum of events.
Coming into college, I was unsure as to how to describe myself and my values and most of all I was unsure of my interests. I had absolutely no idea where I wanted to take my life, I merely knew that I wanted to go to medical school and so decided that I would work towards that goal but how was I supposed to do this? What do I need to be involved in to make myself stand out? These were all questions that went through my head when I was starting college. Throughout my first year, I have slowly been able to put together bits and pieces of where I want to take my education and how I want to make myself unique. I have started to develop interests such as public health/ global health. I have delved into how I want to present myself to others by making a readily available elevator speech to introduce the bigger aspects of who I am. And lastly, I have built upon my values and have proceeded to choose to do activities and join organizations that I feel align with my values.
From UHP, I have gained insight on my strengths which are discipline, achiever, belief, harmony and futuristic. These skills can be put to use in a variety of situations throughout my college career from interviews to day to day activities. By using these strengths, I will be able to work towards making the most of my experiences. Using my strengths can be impactful even in group projects where choosing a part that I would thrive in based on my strengths will be more beneficial for me and my group and so will improve overall performance.
Based on what I have learned about myself and my strengths and values, I hope to engage with UHP and UC in a more involved manner. I feel that I will be able to apply myself to activities that are more pertaining to my interests rather than accommodating to something that I am not fully interested in. In order to do this, I will work to learn about the activities I choose to do and decide whether to do them or not based on how they stack up against my core values. Honestly, it is very difficult to try to refine my strengths as those are the things that have worked best for me throughout the years even without me knowing entirely. If I need to refine my strengths, I think the best thing to do is to start by choosing things that are close to my strengths and interests and then pushing beyond merely excelling in my strengths.
Since global citizen scholar is being able to understand your place in other countries, I hope grow as one by doing study abroad or volunteer abroad programs throughout my undergraduate years are University of Cincinnati. By doing these study abroad and volunteer abroad programs, I hope to immerse myself in the country to learn about their culture, values and become immersed.
